SYSTEM UPDATE: The top three video games of 2013 . . . so far
'Bioshock Infinite,' a new 'Tomb Raider' and the eye-popping 'The Last of Us' have stood out in a crowded field for great titles.

It was worth the wait for 'Bioshock Infinite,' which had been delayed from a 2012 planned release.
There will be a brand-new "Call of Duty" franchise called "Ghosts." And a hot new "Battlefield" game. And the latest game in the "Assassin's Creed" series. And an exciting new franchise, "WatchDogs." And two brand-new consoles. But 2013 has already been a great year for video games, and the big finish to the end of the year shouldn't obscure that. So before the end comes, let's take a look at the top games of the beginning of 2013.
BIOSHOCK INFINITE
Ken Levine's epic earns its keep with perhaps the best gaming story so far this year, even if the combat did grow slightly tedious by the game's very end. Booker DeWitt's trip through the floating city of Columbia has him unraveling a unique mystery, and Elizabeth is easily one of the most memorable sidekicks in gaming. She's even more interesting because of how she interacts with the gamer during battle, feeling that much more real.
Like "The Last of Us," "Infinite" graces us with an absolutely fantastic ending as well, one that ties together much of the "Bioshock" universe and leaves you wanting even more. It's the kind of ending that demanded further discussion. It was a single-player game that demanded replay, simply to digest the awesome story.
THE LAST OF US
Simply the finest game of 2013 so far. Naughty Dog's PlayStation 3 hit blends fantastic visuals and solid, clean game mechanics, and they only make the best part of the game - the story - possible.
The tale treads on some well-worn territory (zombies), but because of the flawless interplay of Joel and Ellie, it's far more personal and dramatic. Naughty Dog takes full advantage of the agency that you get from playing as Joel, and that plays in heavily at the end, drawing out a wealth of emotions from the gamer in a way that wouldn't have been possible if this were simply a film.

TOMB RAIDER
Crystal Dynamics' "Tomb Raider" reboot showcased and developed a different and far more real Lara Croft. Croft's character develops nicely over the story, and as she grows more powerful and independent and more sure of her steps and moves on the island of Yamatai, so does the gamer.
Yamatai itself is a truly beautiful world, too, and Crystal puts tremendous work into the stunning visuals and the game's overall polish; you won't experience any little immersion-breaking graphical issues at all. The game itself is a versatile experience, too, equal parts puzzle-solving, combat and exploration, and it holds together well.
ALSO WORTH NOTING
"CIVILIZATION V: BRAVE NEW WORLD": A fine expansion that makes the Civ V world that much richer.
"SPLINTER CELL: BLACKLIST": Ubisoft's latest Splinter Cell game showcases fine stealth mechanics, and plenty of gadgets, too.
"FIRE EMBLEM: AWAKENING": A fine turn-based strategy game that's destined to be overlooked.
CRYSTAL DYNAMICS
Lara Croft in the updated 'Tomb Raider' video game.
"NI NO KUNI: THE WRATH OF THE WITCH KING": A must-play for any fans of anime and JRPGs out there.
"A CONTEST FOR A KIDS' GAME"
No, you won't have much interest in playing "Phineas and Ferb: The Quest for Cool Stuff," but your children certainly will. And the System Update has three signed copies of the game to give away to gamers.

TURBO BOOST
Just delving into a free downloadable game with loads of potential, "Ascend: Hand of Kul" on the Xbox 360. First impressions: It certainly seems like a fun brawler with a potentially great online ecosystem . . . No surprise here: Batman: Arkham Origins will have a season pass. Bright side? WBIE usually makes these worthwhile . . . Can't get enough of comics these days? Check out "Scribblenauts Unmasked," which hit stores earlier this week . . .
