In Tomb Raider (1996), a mysterious businesswoman named Jacqueline Natla contacted famous adventurer Lara Croft, eager to hire her to locate the lost city of Vilcabamba and recover an ancient artifact called the Scion.

After Natla’s imprisonment, Atlantis was hit by a meteor and huge tidal waves engulfed the city, forever reshaping the landscape of the continent and covering the sacramental Great Pyramid.

Centures later, the powerful Trinity Project at Los Alamos, New Mexico, released Natla from a centuries-long slumber spent in a cryonic freezing chamber. After her escape, she established Natla Technologies to finish what she had started before her imprisonment by fellow rulers Qualopec and Tihocan. Based in Seattle, United States, Natla Technologies earned substantial wealth through the creation of “all things bright and beautiful,” as stated by one of her mercenaries, Larson.

Natla Technologies served as a front with the main goal of conducting mining operations in the Great Pyramid of Atlantis, which was obscured by mountains after Atlantis met its devastating fate. Natla was successful in rediscovering the entrance to the Great Pyramid. All she would need was the three pieces of the Atlantean Scion to activate the pyramid and resume her plans for Atlantean evolution.

Thanks to her enormous wealth, Natla employed mercenaries of various backgrounds to locate pieces of the Scion and to act as her bodyguards. Against her better judgment, she also hired Lara Croft to secure Qualopec’s piece of the Scion, believing Lara was a loose end that could then be tied up by Larson.

Larson couldn’t best Lara, however. After securing the first piece of the Scion Lara was eager to learn more about Natla’s plan and broke into Natla Technologies’ headquarters in Seattle. There she found a Prayer book by a monk named Brother Herbert, dating from 1573. The monk documented rumors between his fellow brothers about Tihocan’s location, and that he was entombed along with his Scion piece under St. Francis’ Folly in Greece. With this new information, Lara was off to investigate – the rest is history!
