Thanks to our fans……..it’s a Happy Birthday this week!
It was one year ago this week that we released the reboot of Tomb Raider. During the past year we have had an amazing ride with all the post release emotions of bringing a huge game to market and watching how it is received, critiqued, enjoyed, and debated by gamers around the world.
When we started on this adventure we had one goal - put Tomb Raider back at the top of the Action/ Adventure genre. To achieve that we knew we had to make something special. We had to make ‘the game of our careers’ in order to have Lara be relevant again and create something that both franchise fans and gamers new to Tomb Raider could love. We needed to shake the foundations of the franchise.
Tomb Raider (2013) was released to critical acclaim and the team at Crystal has been overwhelmed with the way it was so warmly received by both critics and gamers. With more than 70 nominations and awards on industry “best of lists” at the end of 2013 we have been incredibly flattered with the response and feedback. In early 2014 we brought Tomb Raider to the new generation of consoles with Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition. This has also been very well received, sitting currently as one of the best reviewed titles in the new console launch period and offering a greatly enhanced experience for new gamers and returning fans.
Finishing a huge development effort is only part of the story as it takes a massive worldwide effort to bring a game to market. After the studio finishes we hand the baton to our commercial and marketing teams around the world to really push our game forward. These tremendous team efforts over the past 12 months have allowed us to exceed our internal estimates for the title and we now have hit some significant milestones that we are excited to share with you.
By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot, and, having achieved profitability back in 2013 Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance.
At launch we set franchise records for the fastest selling day one and month one in Tomb Raider history. With the positive word of mouth and continued commercial momentum it’s great to see Tomb Raider (2013) on course to become the best-selling game in the history of the franchise! This would be a crowning achievement for the teams around the world, and one that we have our sights firmly set on!
So a BIG thanks to you; everyone who has played the game, enjoyed the game, shown it to their friends, talked about it online etc. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you!
And like every great adventure, the story continues long after the initial launch. It’s great to be able to look back at the last twelve months and share some of the achievements we are really proud of. We can’t wait to continue our adventures with Lara in the sequel that is in development at Crystal Dynamics. We are also looking forward to building on the success and lessons learned from the reboot to continue redefining and setting new benchmarks for Tomb Raider in the years to come.
