Online co-op play for the Xbox 360 version of Crystal Dynamics' first non-Tomb Raider Lara Croft game has been delayed until September 28 when the PS3 and PC versions ship. The release date and price is unaffected.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is set to be one of the bright spots of this year's Summer of Arcade on Xbox Live. Due for release om August 18 for 1200 Microsoft points, the game will no doubt change gamers' expectations of what a game starring Lara Croft can be.
Since announcing the game at GDC 2010 in March, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos have made a number of tweaks to the release plans for the title, some of which it is only revealing today. There's some good news here, and some that's (slightly) disappointing, too.
First the good news; after the initial Xbox Live release, the game will also be coming to PlayStation 3 (as originally planned) on September 28, and it will be joined by a PC version (via Steam) on that same date too. Both versions will be $14.99.
After dropping hints in a number of early interviews, Crystal Dynamics has also confirmed that it will be supporting the game with five additional downloadable content packs. Three of these will be based on the main Guardian of Light game, and feature new puzzles and levels, while the remaining two will be "character" packs. What these will specifically include is yet to be revealed, though Crystal Dynamics' global brand director Karl Stewart tells us "you'll definitely be very happy" about who they will feature. We'd love to see Crystal plunder its back catalog and revive the Legacy of Kain franchise in the Guardian of Light environments...but we'll have to wait til the end of the year to find out.
So that's all pretty good. What's the bad news? Unfortunately, the initial release of the Xbox 360 version will not include online co-op play. It will feature the single player adventure and two player same-screen co-op, but Xbox Live support will arrive on September 28 as a patch. "This game represents a huge opportunity for us," say Stewart, "so we want to ensure that we provide the best possible online experience. Unfortunately that means that we have to delay the Xbox Live co-op game slightly."
All three versions of the game will be identical, come September 28, we're assured.
