Croft Couture #12: Tyalis
The Tomb Raider fandom is full of talented artists, entertainers, and perhaps most notably, phenomenal cosplay talent. “Croft Couture” aims to showcase these lovely and dedicated ladies, and give Lara costumers a spot to share their experiences while dressed as gaming’s leading lady.
I apologize in the delay in posting this Croft Couture – traveling about Germany kept me from properly updating last week! When I first spied Swiss cosplayer Tyalis it was actually due to her wonderful Witchblade costume, a character familiar to most Lara fans that ventured deeper into the Top Cow comic universe. Her eclectic Lara costumes were icing on the cake after that. As always, photos above, interview below!

What first drew you to the Tomb Raider franchise, and what initially inspired you to cosplay as Lara Croft?
When I was a child, I loved watching my father play video games. One day he bought home the first Tomb Raider on PC. I had no right to play, but I helped him to solve puzzles. So the first Tomb Raider I played was the second one. I liked the game at once because it’s a dream for me to discover some abandoned places as in the game. Years later I chose to make a Lara Croft costume for a birthday party. When I looked for information to help me to make it, I discovered cosplay. I liked the principle of making a character alive and to embody it, especially Lara.
What Lara Croft costume did you tackle first?
It was a kind of classic outfit. When I did this costume it was the most popular outfit. The costume wasn’t exact, but a lot of people recognized the character! So I remade it better.
What is your favorite Lara Croft ensemble?
I love the classic outfit, because for me it’s the outfit which represents Lara the most! But I prefer to wear the Underworld outfit; I find it more practical and realistic.
What Croft costumes are still on your roster?
I need to do photoshoots for the Pacific outfit and for the Underworld Jan Mayen Island outfit. Otherwise I will work on making the first movie outfit and I want to make the Doppelganger. But I need to finish other cosplay before!
Which Lara costume was the most difficult to construct? Was it due to a particular garment or prop?
I think the holsters and the bag from the movie outfit. It’s hard to make holsters like the movie, and make sure the pistols are maintained well on it. At the moment I don’t know how I will do the bag, but I don’t want to buy it!
Lara Croft’s lifestyle is full of intrigue and adventure. Do you have any memorable photoshoots or convention appearances that pay tribute to Lara’s lifestyle?
It was for the Legend outfit photoshoot. The photoshoot was last November and the weather was very cold and wet (After the photoshoot I was frozen!). The location is a cave with ice all year long, situated in the middle of the forest and it’s necessary to walk on a mountain path to go there. In the cave it was really necessary to be careful because wooden ladder and the ground were very slippery. It was a little dangerous because the bottom of the cave is in -20 meters and there are 5 meters between platforms.
Along the same lines, what’s the most exotic location you’ve traveled to?
I can’t call that an exotic location but my most far destination was for a trip on the Rocky Mountain between Vancouver and Calgary. I liked discovering this wild region! Otherwise I have seen some famous archeological place in Europe like Roma or Pompeii.
What about Lara’s physical strength or mental prowess most inspires you? Has this, or your desire to cosplay Lara, influenced your daily life?
O I love Lara’s character because she’s a strong and brave woman and maybe she influences me unconsciously. I always aim to be independent and be able to defend myself. I did some combat sport, like Karate or Jiu-jitsu and I do shooting (with a rifle not with guns and I shoot only cardboards targets!). Otherwise I choose to work with historical and archeological objects. Sometime I feel like her when I discover some forgotten treasures in museums reserves!
